Now for the first time, these musical snapshots of their formative years, which have never been available in a commemorative singles edition, are available in this set entitled the Casablanca Singles The sets are housed in a beautiful die-cut shadow box with a limited edition, etched silver metal plate and ribbon-pull magnetic closure, custom 45s box with 26 collectible picture sleeves from original single releases around the world, including Japan, Germany, Holland, Spain and Britain.
Also included is a booklet which tracks the genesis and chart history of each single represented in the package and four individual Kiss masks.

It was originally written by Paul Stanley as a possible track for Rod Stewart, but after the success of the ballad “Beth”, Kiss decided to keep it for themselves as a follow-up. Sung by Peter Criss, the single was an attempt to follow the success of the hit single “Beth” released earlier in the year by releasing another love song sung by Criss. It proved to be a Top 20 hit in the US, peaking at number A version of “Hard Luck Woman” appears on Kiss’s Alive II album; however, it was later revealed that the song was recorded in an empty warehouse with an audience overdubbed, rather than an actual live recording.

As said previously, one Peter Criss vocal per album is plenty for me and I guess in this case I’d rather have Baby Driver than Hard Luck Woman.

Just two weeks later, the band released Rock and Roll Over , which peaked at No. In , they slammed into overdrive, capitalizing on their newfound popularity among the mainstream with the shiny pop-rock gem Love Gun in June, followed by the Christmas-in-October package that was the original Alive II just four months later. No, really. By the time rolled around, KISS had it all and wanted more. Having already broken the mold on how to sell a rock band, Aucoin and the group decided to get even more ambitious.
That plan included each member of the band releasing a solo album on the same day, a feat that had never been pulled off at the time. Little did any of them know that ambition would prove to be the beginning of the end for the biggest rock band in America. So, when September 18, , rolled around, the entire music industry watched the KISS solo experiment play out in real time.
It was not pretty. Gene Simmons peaked at No. None of the tracks particularly jump out at you, but nothing is especially offensive or even curious.
Now the hard part, following up a massive album. They felt the rawness of the band was missing. It was that rawness they loved. So, Eddie Kramer was brought back in to produce.

Which maybe seems like a ridiculous thing to think in retrospect, but I think it hit me that way, relative to KISS’ other albums to that point, because of the up-front sonic clarity of the album, and surely the fact that the album begins with “I Want You” and ends with “Makin’ Love”, with bits like Peter’s “Baby Driver” vocal and so on in-between, had a lot to do my impression.
