The Gazette article ‘So you want to date a teaching assistant’ has been criticized by the University of Western Ontario’s administration and TAs for being sexist and disrespectful. Western University’s daily student newspaper has apologized for publishing a “how-to” guide on dating teaching assistants, which suggests Facebook stalking as a way of getting close to school staff. In a statement issued Wednesday, The Gazette ‘s editorial board apologized for the article , which appeared in its Aug. The article, titled “So you want to date a teaching assistant,” listed a series of tips for students interested in dating their teaching assistants. It suggests that students “Facebook stalk” their TA and express their flirtatious side by being “liberal with those top buttons on your blouse or button-up shirt. The article drew criticism from University staff, including TA’s, who deemed it sexist and disrespectful. The editorial board said Wednesday that the article appeared to promote “excessive drinking, drug use and sexual advances” on TAs. We regret this mistake, and we look forward to reporting on these issues in a more serious manner in the future,” the board said. As a result of the backlash, the paper said it will not distribute the Frosh issue during the school’s orientation week, and will carry out a full retraction. The board said it will also review its editorial practices.
Many attractive college guys are fun-loving jokesters, athletic jocks, or ambitious future CEOs. Others are goofballs, former-best-friend crushes or maybe closet nerds. However, most have one fatal flaw: Immaturity. Im thinking of asking my college/university TA out when the semester ends. Do you think this is a bad idea? Is it unethical? Im 21 and Im.
Long-time reader, first-time writer, etc. I have a question that does not appear to be covered by your existing advice about asking guys out. I am currently a student grad, not college, if that makes any difference and I have a crush on my TA. What do I do? Even if I like people a lot and think they are talented, not everyone gets invited to play in my social sandbox. Also, let a little time go by before you get in touch.
You can even use the delay when you do ask him out. I fortunately! Even if he is really interested in you as well, he has more to lose than you do. I advocate being respectful of that, not least because it will score you points for thoughtfulness and consideration. Speaking as a former TA, dating one of my students would have lost me my job and quite possibly gotten me kicked out of my program, depending how mad the department was.
Serious ethics violation. There are easier spring flings to be had, for sure.

In some ways, sex between students and their professors is part of the mythology of academia. It turns up regularly in film and literature. The scenario typically involves a young female student seduced by her older and more knowledgeable teacher. Historically, male professors have considered a campus full of available young women a perk of academia. Attitudes began to change in the s and s, with the rise of feminism and an increasing number of female scholars in academia.
Real policy changes did not occur until the late s and s, when courts said schools could be held liable in sexual harassment cases. Since then, many universities have begun to address student-professor dating. University fraternization rules are sometimes vague.
